Obsidian figurines of the Mayan culture

Every week I take you on my journey. Looking for unique art and decoration pieces.
This time we are in South America, with the Mayans… Mayan figurines in black obsidian were important artifacts in the ancient Mayan civilization. Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass that forms when lava cools rapidly. It has a deep black color and a glossy, mirror-like appearance, making it a sought-after stone for artistic and spiritual purposes.

The Mayans considered obsidian a sacred stone with spiritual properties. They believed it had the power to ward off negative energy, provide protection and promote spiritual insights. For this reason , Mayan figurines were often made of black obsidian.
